When a corrupt industrialist who escaped justice for heinous crimes is shot dead at his own party, a CBI investigation uncovers six suspects with powerful motives for revenge. Each suspect's story reveals layers of exploitation and systemic injustice that made them potential killers. Will the investigation reveal a murderer or expose how broken institutions create their own form of justice?

The Great Indian Murder is a gripping crime thriller that plunges viewers into the dark underbelly of power, privilege and justice in contemporary India. Based on Vikas Swarup's acclaimed novel Six Suspects, this riveting series directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia weaves together multiple narratives into a complex tapestry of murder, mystery and moral ambiguity.
The story erupts when Vicky Rai, a notorious industrialist and the son of an influential politician, is shot dead at his own celebratory party. The gathering marks his recent acquittal in a heinous case involving the rape and murder of two underage girls—a verdict that sparked public outrage and exposed the rotting nexus between wealth and judicial impunity. His sudden assassination at the height of his arrogance creates a scandal that reverberates through India's corridors of power.
Enter CBI officer Suraj Yadav (Pratik Gandhi) and DCP Sudha Bharadwaj (Richa Chadha), who are tasked with unraveling the mystery behind Vicky's murder. The investigation quickly reveals that every guest at the party—both invited and uninvited—had compelling reasons to want him dead. Six prime suspects emerge, each with their own dark backstory that intersects with Vicky's life of exploitation and cruelty.
Among the suspects is Eketi, a tribal man from the Andaman Islands who has traveled across the country searching for his sacred idol that was stolen by researchers. His quest for justice and spiritual restoration places him at the scene with both motive and means. Then there's Munna, a petty thief whose discovery of a large bag of cash sets off a chain reaction of trouble and suspicion. Mohan Kumar, a craftsman suffering from split personality disorder, adds an element of psychological complexity to the investigation—his unpredictable shifts between personas make him both tragic and potentially dangerous.
The series excels in its portrayal of each suspect's journey, dedicating substantial narrative space to exploring their motivations and the social injustices that shaped their paths. Through flashbacks and parallel storylines, we witness how Vicky's actions destroyed lives and created enemies across different strata of society. The investigation becomes not just about identifying the killer but about confronting the systemic failures that allowed someone like Vicky Rai to operate with impunity for so long.
Tigmanshu Dhulia brings his signature style of gritty realism and social commentary to the series, capturing the stark inequalities and corruption that define modern India. The production features strong performances from a stellar ensemble cast including Ashutosh Rana, Raghuvir Yadav (whose portrayal of Mohan Kumar became a standout), Sharib Hashmi, Paoli Dam and Shashank Arora. Raghuvir Yadav's dual performance as both an angry man and a Gandhi-like pacifist provides moments of dark humor amid the tension.
The narrative unfolds at a deliberate pace, allowing each character's story to breathe while maintaining the central mystery. The series explores themes of class conflict, tribal rights, political corruption and the price of seeking justice in a system designed to protect the powerful. It poses uncomfortable questions about complicity, vengeance and whether true justice can exist when institutions are compromised.
While the series builds toward revealing the murderer, it deliberately leaves certain threads open for future seasons, suggesting that some truths remain elusive and that the cycle of corruption and violence perpetuates beyond any single case. The climax forces viewers to consider whether the killer's actions constitute murder or justice—a moral ambiguity that lingers long after the final episode.
